In 15th–16th-century Italy, Renaissance artists and thinkers rediscovered ancient Roman architecture, sculpture, literature and language. The term Renaissance was coined by the French historian Jules Michelet to describe this revival of art and thought. Today, the term is used to describe a time of rebirth for many things: cultural, political, artistic, scientific and religious movements in Europe during the 14th through 17th centuries.
